San Luis Obispo Engagement Photos: Locations, Tips, + Ideas!

San Luis Obispo is basically California showing off. You can be wandering through gardens, grabbing a drink downtown, running around on top of a hill at sunset, or driving toward the coast without spending your entire engagement session sitting in traffic… I’m like a dog hearing all her favorite words!!

If you want San Luis Obispo engagement photos that feel more like an actual date and less like two hours of, “Okay, now put your hand here,” SLO gives us SO much to work with. I’m sharing my favorite SLO engagement photo locations, what to wear, the best time of year to plan your session, plus a peek at Sara + Jeremy’s session at Cal Poly and Terrace Hill.

Why San Luis Obispo Engagement Photos Are Some of My FAVORITE Sessions

San Luis Obispo forever!!

One of my favorite things about engagement photos in San Luis Obispo is that you don't have to choose one personality for your entire session. We can start somewhere green and quiet, change outfits, grab something downtown, and finish on top of a hill while the sun disappears behind the mountains. Suddenly your engagement gallery feels like an entire little afternoon together instead of 75 versions of you standing in one field. Which, yes. Please.

The Best Locations for San Luis Obispo Engagement Photos

As if I couldn’t love SLO more, the engagement photo locations there are insane. There are so many different styles to choose between for your session, but all of them have that same natural, effortless vibe.

Here are some of my favorite places to take San Luis Obispo engagement photos!!

The Madonna Inn

If you love all things bold, retro, and funky… The Madonna Inn is your place.

It’s a hotel with the most INCREDiBLE vintage, retro goodness, and if you consider yourself a colorful or nontraditional person, you’ll love getting photos here.

Every time I think of a Madonna Inn engagement session, I picture thrifted outfits, some good, old Fleetwood Mac music on the aux, and adorable, colorful pictures. And all of that? It’s the good stuff.

Tolosa Winery

For classy, wine-soaked engagements, go to Tolosa Winery

Vineyard engagement pictures in a flowy maxi dress, right at golden hour always work well. I mean, who doesn’t love sipping wine like you’re on a date instead of in the middle of a photoshoot??

Sunset Drive-In

Okay, I’ve pretty much been dying to take engagement photos at Sunset Drive-In. The vintage vibes we could get? You guys tossing popcorn into each other's mouths? The casual, effortlessly romantic vibes? Pleaseee.

Cal Poly Botanical Gardens

Lush gardens + endless photo opportunities = my idea of a good time.

Cal Poly Botanical Gardens was the first spot we hit in Sara and Jeremy’s session, and I’m constantly reminded of how much I love it, because, I mean, just look at these pictures!!

This is one of those SLO engagement photo locations that works for any vibe, whether you’re going funky and outdoorsy or classy and put-together.

Terrace Hill

The grand finale is Terrace Hill, which… I can probably never say enough good things about. This is where we ended Sara and Jeremy’s session, and I’m honestly not sure what my fav part of this place is between the direct sunlight, the 360º city views, and the mountain backdrops!!

It’s iconic in SLO (for good reason), and makes some of the best golden engagement pictures you could ever imagine.

Getting Engagement Photoshoot Permits for San Luis Obispo Parks

As always, when choosing a location, be mindful of getting any necessary permits. Some locations will require them, but it’ll always depend on where you’re taking photos!!

Requirements depend on whether you're photographing on city, county, university, state park, or privately owned property, and policies can change for each and every one.

Translation: please don't spend your Tuesday night reading municipal permit PDFs. When we're planning your session, I'll help you figure out what applies to the location we're actually using.

The Best Time of Year for San Luis Obispo Engagement Photos

SLO shows off year-round, and there’s truly never a bad choice for San Luis Obispo engagement photos.

Spring gives greener hills, wildflowers depending on conditions, and cooler temperatures. Summer brings warmer weather, longer evenings, and golden sunlight. Fall is allll about warmer earth tones, date-night energy, and earlier sunsets (as the season progresses). And winter has a quieter feel, potentially greener landscapes after rain, and cooler, cozier weather.

Personally? Give me a warm summer evening, a film camera, and two people willing to run around a hill until the sun disappears and I'm VERY easy to please.

What Time Should You Take Engagement Photos in San Luis Obispo?

I love golden hour as much as the next photographer with a Pinterest account, but I am absolutely not afraid of direct sun. Sometimes that punchier California light is exactly what makes a gallery feel alive, which is what I’m all about. Going up to Terrace Hill a little bit before sunset to soak up the light? That’s the sweet spot.

What to Wear for Engagement Photos in SLO

If you need outfit ideas, San Luis Obispo is basically begging for a vibrant, modern outfit for engagement photos. Whether it’s all-denim, a matching two-piece set, or a bold pop of color, I can almost promise that it’ll work here.

I absolutely love seeing my couples in things like midi dresses and boots (like Sara’s iconic outfit) or cute little rompers, and if you need ideas, I’d 100% say to shop Reformation’s collection.

The BEST Ideas for a San Luis Obispo Engagement Session

You do not need to show up with a Pinterest board full of poses. Actually... Please don't stress yourself out doing that. Give me a place you love, clothes you feel hot in, and something you two genuinely like doing together. I'll take it from there.

You can start by walking around somewhere like the botanical gardens or through the historic city streets, grab an iced coffee, and spend your day like you’re on a date. Then, you can end at sunset dancing in front of the iconic views from Terrace Hill!!

If you want something a little more structured, know that I’m always down to do a funky, vintage-inspired session at the drive-in movies. Think thrifted outfits, popcorn buckets, and neon lights, all in the kind of session that feels like there’s not even a camera around. That’s kind of on my bucket list, so if you’re interested… Let’s chat (please).

I do have to say… Film engagement photos are really fantastic for San Luis Obispo engagement photos. You can see my entire spiel on why I love film engagement photos so much here, but know that the nostalgia and sunny grain in photos like this are something really special.

Sara + Jeremy’s Sun-Soaked Engagement Session At Cal Poly Botanical Gardens + Terrace Hill

This session was spent spinning and dancing on the top of a hill with the most incredible sunlight, and yes, it was better than your best dreams!!!

By the end of it, Sara and Jeremy were sprinting around the fields, just taking in the views of San Luis Obispo together, and it was the actual sweetest thing I’ve ever seen. Probably one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen, too.

Sara and Jeremy chose the locations because they were places that are special to their relationship (which I ALWAYS recommend; see why here), and I couldn’t have loved it any more. Jeremy grew up in SLO and went to Cal Poly Botanical Gardens super often, and he and Sara hung out in Terrace Hill alllll the time when they first started dating. That’s the kind of meaning that makes engagement sessions so special!!

Cambria Shelley | SoCal Engagement Photographer

If you're looking for a California engagement photographer who will let you actually hang out with your person instead of turning your session into a two-hour posing class… Hi. Very much my thing. We'll pick somewhere that feels like you, make a loose plan, and then let the rest happen. Film will absolutely be involved, because… Obviously.
