Why Film Engagement Photos Hit Different: Karson + Brandon’s Laguna Beach Engagement Session

There’s something about film engagement photos that gets me every time. The cinema of it all? The romance? The storytelling?? As a Laguna Beach engagement photographer, I’m actually obsessed!! If you want your engagement photos to look like they were grabbed straight from a movie scene… Film photography + Laguna Beach = the perfect combo for that vibe. And Karson and Brandon’s session is here to prove it!!

Why I LOVE Film Engagement Photos as a Laguna Beach Engagement Photographer

Film photography has my HEART. And it’s a style that works really, really well for engagement photoshoots that feel 100% connected and totally intentional. Bonus points if it’s on the beach!!

When it comes to film engagement photos, everything just slows down. We focus less on posing, more on movement, because running down the beach hand-in-hand will always beat out that super stiff, super awkward prom-style posing. We let moments unfold instead of forcing them to happen. We make connection the biggest priority, because perfection? It’s overrated. When you bring that intention to the table, it creates the kind of photoshoot where you walk away saying, “Okay… That was actually the most fun I’ve ever had!!”

That’s not even to mention how freakin’ GORGEOUS the photos turn out to be. As a Laguna Beach engagement photographer, I see how film captures light in a softer, more organic way (especially for beach engagement photos) that feels more true-to-life than overly edited. And that imperfect perfection with a little bit of grain, a little bit of blur, and those adorable in-between moments?? Yeah. That’s what really gets me.

Who Are Film Engagement Photos the Right Fit For

If all of that’s scratching something in your brain… Film engagement photos might just be right up your alley. And if that’s you, I love you already!!

The types of couples that I usually see go for film engagement photos are:

  • The Pinterest obsessed (because, let’s be real, you want your engagement photos to be aesthetic!!)

  • Those who live in SoCal and spend every free moment they have on the beach

  • Ones that crave real moments getting captured (not the stiff, overposed ones)

  • Those who would choose running around on the beach over getting super dressed up to go out to a classy bar

  • The ones who want their engagement photos to feel more like a date than a photoshoot

Why Laguna Beach and Film Photography Make a Perfect Match

Okay, it’s no secret that I’m a lover of beach engagement photos through and through (I mean, just take it from Christina and Garrett’s session… Or Summer and Alex’s… Or Steph and Max’s…). Laguna Beach, though? It’s different. It has the vibrant colors of my literal dreams, and don’t even get me started on the way the light hits the water here. Obsessed!!

The spot that we hit for Karson and Brandon’s Laguna Beach engagement is one that I found and immediately said, “Yep. This is the one.” It was private, quiet, and remote since it towers over the city, but you still get that blue water goodness that makes photos on the beach sooo incredibly gorgeous. I’ll take sessions here forever, please and thanks.

This whole session literally felt like these two were on top of the world together (Alexa, play You Are in Love by Taylor Swift), and the date vibes were going CRAZY. Like, the amount of space they had just for them and the way their love filled it??? I’m never getting over it.

As a Laguna Beach engagement photographer, I knew we had to get film engagement photos as soon as I saw this spot. It was the perfect wide-open space for the kind of cinematic, blurry movement that only film photography can bring!! And the way the light hit? It was magic in its purest form.

Being able to know when to step back to capture moments is key, and that’s honestly what film photography is all about. So, yeah, I’m there to get those moments where the light is hitting like it’s being directed right at you, and you’re both belly laughing into each other. Or when you’re spinning around, feeling like the most carefree person in the world. Or when you’re sitting in the flowers, snuggled up against each other like the cutest dang people in the whole world.

Karson and Brandon’s Film Engagement Photos at Laguna Beach

Karson and Brandon’s wholeee session was to die for. From the beginning, where they spent their time dancing in the flower fields, to the end of the shoot, where we were all DELIRIOUSLY goofy, we had a whole blast. All the blur and all the dust and Karson’s cute little boots created some film engagement photos that I’m gonna love forever and ever!!
