Calamigos Ranch is a Malibu wedding venue that realllly stays with me as a Southern California wedding photographer. I’ve photographed several weddings at Calamigos Ranch, and one of the biggest things I love about it is that, basically… She has range. Every wedding here can look completely different depending on which space you choose, whether it’s a dinner-style candlelit garden wedding or a colorful celebration with a crazy dance floor.

Calamigos Ranch Weddings at a Glance
Okay, Calamigos Ranch has everything out of my dreams. It’s a venue that tells a story, and all the views surrounding it make it feel unreal. The Malibu Hills in the background? Love. The way the light hits at the ceremony site? It’s everything. It has rustic charm, lush gardens, and serene vineyards all in one. She’s versatile, and that’s something I seriously love.

Venue style: Ranch, garden, vineyard, wooded, outdoor… As I said, range!!!
Wedding size: The max capacity is 3,500 (depending on the space you choose), but you can have just 35 if that’s more of your vibe. It works really well for big or small weddings, and that’s one of my favorite parts.
Indoor and outdoor options: Yep!!
Getting ready spaces on-site: Yes, so no transportation chaos.
Accommodations on-site: Yeah, and they’re gorgeous. Getting to be with your favorite people all weekend long is such a quiet little luxury!!

The Venues at Calamigos Ranch
There are 7 main spots at Calamigos Ranch that you can choose between for your ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception, and they’re all amazing. They’re fully separate from one another so that you’re, like, really secluded, and they each have their very own energy. The hardest part of the entire wedding planning process at Calamigos Ranch is choosing which one you want to say your vows in, seriously!!
The Redwood Room
The Redwood Room is a patio garden that’s surrounded by lush trees and then an interior with exposed wood that feels so charming, allll the way around. It’s great for weddings that keep everything in the same area, but still have defined spaces for each section of the day!
Best for: Classic, romantic weddings that want indoor/outdoor flow
Max capacity: 250
What it feels like: Timeless and luxe, with the easiest, most natural flow
Why I love photographing it: There’s so much variety in just this one space. Since it’s indoor-outdoor, there are always people enjoying every part of it, which makes everything feel lived-in, perfect for candids and documentary-style photos (my faves)!!
The Oak Room
For a literal storybook setting feel, The Oak Room is the one. It’s an outdoor ceremony space surrounded by natural wood elements with an open glass house for receptions. And yeah, I’ll stop you right there… It IS as magical as it sounds.
Best for: Intimate weddings that feel secluded and tucked-away

What it feels like: Imagine a woodland fairy having a wedding in the woods, and that’s what The Oak Room brings
Why I love photographing it: The way the light hits here is what really stands out to me. You’re surrounded by trees all day long, so the little pockets of light that shine through feel literally Heaven-sent, and I truly could not love it more for photos.
The Pavilion
Okay… Outdoor ceremonies at The Pavilion have my heart. I’ll never be over the curved ceremony backdrop, the string lights hanging from the trees, or the enchanted forest feel that lasts from ceremony to reception.
Best for: Expansive, romantic weddings with a little touch of luxury that feels natural and neverrr stuffy

What it feels like: Luxury, organic, and a little whimsical (basically the recipe for a good day)
Why I love photographing it: Everyone just… Relaxes here. Ceremonies feel like a MOMENT, and then the tented receptions are sooo full of fun. Also, the greenery surrounding you?? It doesn’t hurt.
The Birchwood Room
The Birchwood Room is the sweetest little patio and courtyard combo that’s giving Speak Now vibes to the maxxx.
Best for: Intimate + sweet outdoor weddings
Max capacity: 120
What it feels like: Completely personal and full of romance. Trust me.
Why I love photographing it: The connection in this space is always incredible. Everyone basically spends the day belly-laughing, hugging, and mingling, and I love the way that sort of happiness fills your gallery SO much.
The Barn
Because who doesn’t love an open-air barn??
The Barn is full of exposed wood beams, rustic chandeliers, and an open dance floor that all flow together perfectly to make the cutest, most charming little venue space.
Best for: Warm, inviting, laid-back weddings

What it feels like: Organic and easy to live in
Why I love photographing it: The reception lighting here is a standout for me. As a Southern California wedding photographer who loves all things dimly-lit… The chandeliers and candlelit receptions are my jam!!
North 40
North 40 invented fun. It’s huge and whimsy-filled, and it could NOT be more perfect for fun, nontraditional weddings. I mean, it has a literal Ferris wheel plus TONS of space to do whatever you want with!!
Best for: Unique, FUN weddings
Max capacity: 3,500
What it feels like: Whimsical, nontraditional, and completely stands out from literally any wedding your guests have ever been to in their lives. It makes you want to frolic!!
Why I love photographing it: The wide-open space gets incredible lighting and also lets you do quite literally whatever you want with the space. And when it’s an area that feels 100% like you, it’s my favorite kind of day to photograph.
The Vineyards
If you love a luxe, elevated vineyard wedding venue, this grand finale is for you. The Vineyards at Calamigos Ranch have the most incredible views (and insane vibes, of course).
Best for: Effortlessly luxurious weddings that feel European-inspired

What it feels like: The Vineyards give Wine Country vibes to the max, and when everyone has a glass in their hand all night long, it makes it feel like the best sun-soaked dinner party ever
Why I love photographing it: This might just be my favorite spot on the list for portraits, because the lush hills and mountain views give us backdrops that could actually bring tears to my eyes.

Okay, I’m just a Southern California wedding photographer, but what I do know is that the cost of a Calamigos Ranch wedding can range significantly depending on what package you choose, how many guests you have, the season, and your package inclusions.
Calamigos currently lists its wedding package starting at $265 per person, plus service, sustainability fees and tax. Pricing can change and your final cost will depend on guest count and package details, so I always recommend requesting the current wedding package directly from Calamigos Ranch rather than relying on numbers from an old blog post.
What to Know Before Planning a Calamigos Ranch Wedding
Now, let’s get into the logistics of planning a Calamigos Ranch wedding, because it’s true that every good day starts with a good plan.
Decide on Your Venue Space First
Your space determines basically the whole rest of your day: the vibe, the guest count, the timeline, and the photos.
Think About Guest Transportation
Calamigos Ranch is secluded and tucked away (which is 100% part of the charm), so guests need a clear transportation plan.
One thing that makes planning a Calamigos Ranch wedding super easy is that your guests can stay on-site so that transportation logistics don’t have to be an issue, but for the guests who aren’t staying all weekend, think about things like shuttles and arrival timing when you’re planning your day!! Note that they do offer valet parking, which also makes things incredibly easy for you and your guests.
Build Extra Time Into Your Timeline
Calamigos Ranch is HUGE. That means you’ll be moving between getting-ready spaces, your first look + portrait locations, your ceremony, and your reception. And if I’m being totally honest, that can take longer than you expect.
My top tip?? Build extra time into your timeline. If you think that getting ready will take 5 hours, build in 6, just in case. If you think your ceremony is going to take 30 minutes, give it 45 minutes on the actual schedule. This can make a night-and-day difference in how you experience your day, because no one wants to be running barefoot from your getting-ready suite to the first portrait location on the list… Trust me.
Plan Portraits Strategically
Even though every inch of Calamigos Ranch is stunning, I’ll be the first to say that we don’t need to spend an hour of your wedding day wandering the entire property to find the best golden hour photo spot.
Before your wedding, we’ll choose 2-3 different locations for portraits based on lighting and your timeline, and as your Southern California wedding photographer, that’s exactly the kind of stuff I’m here to help with!!
Ask About Event Restrictions
Different locations on the property may have different rules, so I always recommend checking with the venue about things like music volume rules, curfews, open flames, decor, vendor access, setup and breakdown times, and any vendor rules BEFORE your day. Because in the middle of getting your full glam, mimosa in hand, is not the time to answer a call from your florist who’s wondering where to go.
What Calamigos Ranch Is Like (From a Southern California Wedding Photographer’s Perspective)
As someone who’s photographed many, many Calamigos Ranch weddings (and also just weddings in general, which you can see on my blog)... I know a thing or two about delivering galleries from weddings here that feel vibrant, emotional, and completely real.
Probably my favorite part about this Malibu wedding venue is that the property gives you a TON of variety: trees, open fields, wood architecture, vineyards, gardens, twinkle lights… It’s basically a playground for me!!
Don’t read that and get nervous that I’m gonna steal you away from your people for 45 minutes, though. As I said before, we’ll make a plan for portrait logistics before your wedding so that we’re not spending time on your wedding day scrambling from one location to another!! We’ll find a gorgeous, private location for your first look and then the most insane views for sunset portraits, and have it planned to a T before the day ever begins.
Speaking of sunset portraits, know that I’m also fully obsessed with the lighting here. Midday light gives us some good shaded areas in the trees and some brighter areas in the fields, and golden hour feels like real-life magic. Even after the sun sets, everyone is a little tipsy, and you’re in your reception mini dress… The lighting works here. There are string lights, candles, indoor reception lighting, and of course, direct flash photos.

The Best Time of Year to Get Married at Calamigos Ranch
I know that there are some of you who are reading this and have already decided that this is your dream wedding venue, and now you’re ready to take the next 5 steps into wedding planning. And I totally get it. So let’s talk about WHEN to get married here. Spoiler alert: quite literally any time works so well.
Spring weddings have lush greenery, moderate temperatures, and sweeeet romance.
Summer weddings bring long evenings, warm weather, and outdoor-dinner-party-celebration energy.
Fall has gorgeous golden tones, GREAT lighting, and crisper, cooler evenings.

Chris and Allie’s day honestly had everything I love. Beautiful colors, so much love, tons of intentional details, and the kind of effortlessness that makes things flow SO naturally.
They were hidden away with their favorite people, and the day felt exactly how the couple wanted: an intimate fairy garden party. Their guests wore bright colors and put flowers in the couple's hair, the twinkle lights felt like they had magic in them, and the dance floor was full of celebration. The greenery and twinkle lights at Calamigos meant they didn't need to over-design the space, which left SO much room for complete presence and zero performance. Their colorful florals stood out against the trees so beautifully, while the existing lighting gave the reception that fairy-garden feeling they so badly wanted.

At the Vineyards, I’m obsessed with sunset portraits on the rolling hills. At the Birchwood room, we can sneak away to the little waterfront section for some dreamy couple’s portraits. The important part, though, is that I choose two or three places that work with your timeline instead of dragging you around a 200+ acre property because Pinterest told us we needed twelve portrait locations.
