Memorial Ideas for Weddings That Feel Special + Personal
I don't think there's ever been a wedding where I haven't cried at least once. Sometimes it's during the vows, sometimes it's a dad’s speech, and sometimes it's because grandma is tearing up in the front row. The moments that get me every single time, though? When couples find a beautiful way to include someone who's no longer here. Those quiet little moments absolutely wreck me (in the best way).
If you're reading this because someone you love won't physically be there on your wedding day… I'm really sorry. I know that's a heavy thing to carry while planning something that's supposed to feel joyful. As a SoCal wedding photographer, I’ve seen some wedding memorial ideas that are simple and some that are grand, and the truth is: There’s no right or wrong way to do it, as long as it feels true to you.
These memorial ideas for a wedding are bringing some inspiration for how you can do it in a way that feels personal and truly special, just like that person was to you.
Why Couples Include Memorial Ideas for Weddings
One of the things I love most about weddings is that they're never just about two people.
They're about family.
The people who helped shape you.
The traditions you grew up with.
The people who should have been there.
If you're missing someone on your wedding day, I want you to know this: There isn't a right or wrong way to honor them. It doesn't have to be big. Sometimes it's the quietest little details that end up meaning the most.
Memorial Ideas for Weddings
As I said, there’s no wrong way to honor the memory of someone you love. I’ve captured a lot of weddings as a SoCal wedding photographer, and I’ve seen so many different ways to do it, each with their own special meaning behind them!
Here are a few of the best ways I’ve seen, so that you can find what feels right to you:
Have A Ceremony Chair Dedicated to Them
Having a reserved seat for where they would sit at your ceremony is a detail that gets me every single time. You can decorate it with a sash, photos of them, or even some of their belongings to make it their seat.
It’s a small way to make what it would look like if they were there real, and that holds the kind of weight that shifts your whole day.
Attach a Locket to Your Look
Lockets of passed loved ones are a detail I always love, whether it’s attached to a bouquet, a suit jacket, or even as your jewelry.
I love lockets because they're one of those details nobody notices at first, until you tell them the story. And then, suddenly, it isn't just jewelry anymore. It's your grandpa walking you down the aisle, your mom wrapped around your bouquet, someone you miss getting to be with you all day long.
Add an Excerpt About Them in a Speech
Whether they’re mentioned in the ceremony speech or you read about them during a toast at the reception, speaking about them is a great way to let their memory live on. You get to remind everyone of them, share who they were, and really make their presence feel big.
Light a Candle During the Wedding
A candle shows that their spirit is there with you, and it’s a small detail that adds a whole lot of meaning throughout the entire day. You can light a candle on a reserved chair for the ceremony, then carry it with you to the reception to use it as decor!
Display Photos of Them
Now, I might be biased, but photos are my favorite way to preserve memories. What better honor than having your loved one displayed in some of their happiest moments?? Photos through phases of their lives maybe put a face to people who didn’t know them, or remind someone of how their eyes crinkled when they smiled.
Play Their Favorite Song
One of my fave memorial ideas for weddings is to play their favorite song during the reception. It’s something that’s a little fun and nods to them in a really cool way, and I love it every time!
Have a Drink (or Food) Inspired By Them
Lastly, but definitely not least, is having their favorite food or drink on the menu. It could be spread out on the dessert table, or a signature cocktail named after them, and it’s a sure way to infuse a little bit of their personality into your day.
How to Choose the Right Wedding Memorial Ideas
If you’re stuck between some of these and need help narrowing it down, here are a few questions you can ask yourself:
Would I rather honor them privately or publicly?
Would they have loved being the center of attention?
Is there something they were known for?
What reminds me of them every single time?
Jade & Trey’s Gorgeous, Meaningful Wedding
Jade and Trey’s is a day I’ll neverrr forget. It had the perfect mix of sentiment and pure fun, and all of the love shone SO strongly throughout the day!! Every detail was planned out incredibly well, and it’s actually the kind of day that I think about before falling asleep every night.
It started with the best, most chill vibes: Jade getting ready in the main house with her best gals, dancing around to Taylor Swift and belly laughing over mimosas. And that energy stayed through the WHOLE day. There were smiles and tears and giggles and hugs everywhere you looked!!
Don’t even get me started on their vendors, because they were seriously insane. The views from the venue?? The flow of the day, carried out perfectly?? The florals that looked like something straight out of Pinterest??? I was OBSESSED, and I cannot recommend these people enough!!:

How Jade and Trey Included These Memorial Ideas for Weddings in Their Day
Jade lost her father and chose a few different wedding memorial ideas to honor him that I loved SO much. First, her sister officiated the wedding, and both of her moms joined in to give a tribute. It was beautiful, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house!!
One of my favorite details from the entire day was her dad's old film camera. She still uses it all the time, so seeing it sitting alongside all of her wedding details just felt...right. It wasn't there because someone told her to include it; it was there because he's still part of her everyday life. And that’s the best kind of detail to include.
Last, but certainly not least, Jade and Trey also decided to use the father-daughter dance spot to get the dance floor started by having everyone grab a Miller Lite (Jade’s dad’s favorite beer) and doing a huge “cheers” to him.
When everyone grabbed a Miller Lite and raised it toward the sky, there wasn't really a way to tell where the laughing ended and the crying started. People hugged, smiled, wiped away tears, told stories… It didn't feel like they were mourning him, it felt like they were celebrating him. And I truly don't think there could have been a more beautiful way to honor someone!
