Small Wedding Ideas For a Chic 2027 Santa Barbara Wedding

I might be biased, but Santa Barbara weddings have my whole heart!! They have such a warm, effortless feel that hits every time, especially when it’s an intimate wedding. And as a Santa Barbara wedding photographer, it’s kind of everything to me. So, if you’re the type of person who thrives when you’re not the center of attention, and you’re dreaming of a wedding that’s chic, totally you, and super laidback… You’re gonna want to see these small wedding ideas from Emma and Ryan’s Bodega Los Alamos wedding!

Small Wedding Ideas That I’m Obsessed With as a Santa Barbara Wedding Photographer

If an intimate wedding is calling your name because you want to actually get to chat with your wedding guests and not feel like you have to perform all day, you’ll love these small wedding ideas. Because, take it from me: you can have an intimate wedding that’s still super chic and looks like it appeared straight from Pinterest

Go for a Classic Courthouse Elopement

Whether you and your lover tie the knot at the courthouse and then call it a day, or you do a small city hall wedding then a bigger party after, know that I’m so here for it. Courthouse weddings are some of my favorite days EVER because they feel equal parts classy and fun, but always completely you!

There are so many ways to add personality to a day like this (funky outfits, outfit changes, fun pops of color, different wedding photo locations…), and if you need inspo, you won’t want to miss Haley and Conor’s day

Set a Fun Wedding Guest Dress Code

This is a 2027 wedding trend that I’m seriously obsessed with. Like, I seriously don’t think I could ever capture enough weddings with it. Funky, maximalist wedding guest dress codes?? That’s like, my whole jam as a Santa Barbara wedding photographer who loves alllll things colorful and unique.

Emma and Ryan’s guests came with the bold colors of my dreams, and I probably think about it daily. Obsessed forever!!

Choose Documentary-Style Wedding Photography

Documentary-style wedding photography is a trend that I think is here to stay, and I mean… It’s easy to see why. Capturing real moments that make you feel things?? I’ll choose that over forced, posed moments ANY day. And this works especially well for intimate weddings, because they’re somehow even more filled with those little moments that mean SO much.

From a Santa Barbara wedding photographer’s perspective, it’s important to always communicate your ideal photography style with your photographer!! Emma and Ryan wanted to be completely unposed aside from a few editorial shots, and the result was a gallery filled with nothing but authentic, sentimental moments that live in my heart FOREVERRR. Their first look photos?? Don’t even get me started!!

Hold an Outdoor Wedding Reception

Something about an outdoor wedding reception at a small wedding just makes sense. The family-style outdoor dinner party vibes? I literally cannot get enough of it, and Santa Barbara summers just feel so right for connection like that.

Decorate With Organic Wedding Decor

Fruit centerpieces, wildflowers, natural color palettes, you name it. When you’re getting married in a place as GORGEOUS as Santa Barbara, you have to bring that into your aesthetic at least a little bit.

Emma and Ryan’s wedding had natural wood from the garden at Bodega, a wildflower bridal bouquet that should be going viral on Pinterest, like, RN, and signage that had a handmade feel that made me want to cry. This style of decor just works for intimate weddings, especially in SoCal!!

Small Wedding Ideas: Planning Tips

Weddings can’t be ALL aesthetic, so we do have to get into some of the practical stuff. If you’re planning an intimate wedding, here are a few of the things you need to know for a day that feels completely effortless and lived-in:

Intimate Wedding Venues in Southern California

Okay, your intimate wedding venue? It’s what will set the tone for your WHOLE day. So, choosing the SoCal wedding location that feels like you is key to a good intimate wedding plan!!

Here are a few intimate wedding locations in Southern California that I’m kind of in love with:

  • The beach – because beach elopements here are truly something special.

  • The courthouse – the Beverly Hills Courthouse creates a whole elopement scene that feels like it’s out of a movie, and I love it every single time.

  • Redbird – if you love the vibes of laughing and clinking wine glasses with your fave people under string lights all evening while the sun sets behind you… That’s what you’ll get here (here’s proof)!!

  • Bodega – this is where Emma and Ryan’s intimate wedding was, and it has kind of an elevated backyard wedding feel where you get to just… hang out with your people. No fluff, just good energy and an easy atmosphere! If you love it as much as I do, you’ll also want to see Sydney and Dustin’s wedding and Angie and Ian’s!!

Best Practices for Creating a Small Wedding Guest List

Intimate weddings only get tricky when you’re creating your guest list, because I know the never-ending rabbit hole of “Ohhh, but if I invite this person then I have to invite this person,” and so on and so forth.

My top tip as a Santa Barbara wedding photographer (who has helped plan a LOT of intimate weddings)? Only invite the people you truly want there. Don’t worry about making people upset or inviting your crazy uncle just because you feel that obligation. This is YOUR day, babe! Make it what you want!!

Book Wedding Vendors Who Get Small Weddings

Honestly… Small weddings are a totally different ballgame from a big wedding. When you’re hiring wedding vendors, make sure they’ve done an intimate wedding like yours before. Small weddings call for different amounts, different flows, and totally personalized processes!

A Sample Timeline for a Small Wedding

Your small wedding ideas absolutely thrive when you’ve planned a timeline that gives them space, and the best part? That can look so different depending on what you want your day to look like!!

This is one that can change depending on if you’re holding a courthouse wedding vs a beach wedding vs an intimate wedding at a venue, so if you need timeline ideas for a small wedding… This is for you:

9:00 am: Get ready – whether it’s with your besties or with your partner, this is one of the most EXCITING moments of the day

12:00 pm: First look, vows, and portraits

1:00 pm: Wedding party and/or family photos

2:00 pm: Ceremony

2:30 pm: Cocktail hour + mingling with guests

3:00 pm: Start celebrating, however that looks to you

After this, you can choose to have a full-on reception where you’re on the dance floor to Beyoncé all night, or even go to a restaurant with some of your favorite people to grab a bite and celebrate in their company!!

Focus on What Really Matters

Again, this is YOUR day. You’re probably choosing to have a small wedding because you want to experience your day, not perform in it. If that’s true, hold that intention through every part of wedding planning and make sure that every decision you make has that in mind. That’s when you’ll get the real wedding of your absolute dreams

Best Time of Year for a Small Santa Barbara Wedding

If your intimate wedding is gonna be in Santa Barbara… You’re my kinda person. And also, you’re probably wondering when you should hold your wedding.

The weather is PEAK California in spring and summer, and as a sunshine lover… Know that this is when you’ll get the golden hour photos that could be in a wedding magazine, too.

Bodega Los Alamos is great in the spring, because, those florals?? They’re INCREDIBLY stunning!!

Emma and Ryan’s Intimate Wedding at Bodega Los Alamos

Emma and Ryan pulled off every single small wedding idea they had SO well. Their day at Bodega had the most gorgeous, organic decor, a whole lotta love, and an incredibly warm vibe that I couldn’t be more obsessed with. My favorite part of the whole day, though, was that the day felt more like a big hang as opposed to a stuffy wedding. That’s what my couples plan intimate weddings for, so that’s what it’s literally all about!!

I have to say… Their vendor team?? SO fantastic. If you’re planning an intimate wedding and have a ton of small wedding ideas that you want brought to life perfectly… These are your people!!
