Modern Downtown LA Wedding at Vibiana: Inspiration for Couples Searching for the Best LA Wedding Locations

Okay… I’m obsessed with a good city wedding, and this day at Vibiana in Downtown LA was just everything! The setting, the energy, the cute couple, the details, it was giving modern, cool, city-in-love vibes but also SOOO classy,  in the best freaking way!

Cheyenne and Christian’s wedding felt like a reminder that you don’t have to do things the “traditional” way for it to be beautiful. It can be personal, loud, messy, fun, literally whatever you want, and still completely timeless!

A City Wedding at One of the Most Iconic LA Wedding Locations

Vibiana is one of those LA wedding locations that looks like it came straight out of a movie, not to mention, cathedrals are sooo classy and timeless, and they never get old. The white walls, the huge arches, the way the light sneaks through the windows?! It’s such a dream spot for couples who want something downtown but still warm and personal!

And then you throw Cheyenne and Christian into the mix, game over. She’s a professional dancer (so you already know the dance floor was about to be wild), and he matched her energy every second of the day. Their wedding was just pure fun from start to finish.

There weren’t any stiff poses, no awkward transitions, just good food, good music, and the best group of people celebrating two people who couldn’t stop smiling at each other (and I literally couldn’t stop smiling as I was editing these, either!)

Why Vibiana Deserves the Hype

If you’re searching for LA wedding locations, Vibiana should absolutely be on your list. It’s one of those rare venues that offers both a beautiful indoor space and a small area to sneak out for photos. We went outside for a few minutes in that golden LA light, and I swear, it hit just right between the buildings (yes, I’m the photographer who freaks out over the lighting.)

Pro tip: when you’re checking out Downtown LA wedding venues, look for spots with a mix of clean lines and texture, somewhere that has natural light but still feels like the city. Vibiana totally nails that.

When the Reception Turned Into a Flash Mob (Yes, Seriously)

You know those moments where you’re like… “Wait, is this really happening?” That was this reception. Cheyenne changed into a reception dress, the band kicked it up a notch, and suddenly she and her dance friends broke out into a full flash mob. It was unreal. Everyone was screaming, cheering, jumping in, and it was one of those moments you just know people will be talking about for years.

The live band from Dart Collective made the whole night feel like a concert, and the checkered dance floor? Absolutely iconic. I’ll never be over it.

Little Things That Made a Big Difference

There were so many moments I loved from this day, like the sweet little touches in the décor, the way the florals popped against the white walls, and how every single person there looked like they were actually having fun!

That’s the beauty of candid wedding photography, the best photos aren’t the perfectly posed ones. They’re the in-between moments like Cheyenne fixing her lipstick while laughing with her bridesmaids, or Christian spinning her around mid-song. Those are the shots that hit you right in the feels later!

How to Choose the Right LA Wedding Location

City weddings are a whole different world, but they’re also some of my favorites. Here are a few tips if you’re starting your venue search:

  1. Lighting is everything. Big buildings mean big shadows, so pick a place that still lets that sunset glow in. If you need more tips for lighting, check out my blog When to Take Golden Hour Photos for Your SoCal Wedding: Inspiration from Lindsey and Tim

  2. Make sure there’s a little breathing room. A private courtyard or side street makes a huge difference for photos.

  3. Stay true to you. Don’t pick a space because it’s trendy; pick one that feels like you. Cheyenne and Christian made Vibiana their own, and it worked because it was so them.

Why I Love the Documentary Style

This wedding was the perfect example of why I’ll always shoot documentary-style. I don’t force anything; I just let it happen and document it as it unfolds.

Cheyenne and Christian wanted to actually enjoy their day, not spend it worrying about posing or timelines, and that’s exactly what we did. They laughed, danced, had the literal time of their lives, and soaked it all in while I quietly followed along, capturing it all.

If you’re the type of couple who wants your photos to feel super natural, like little time capsules of what your day actually felt like, documentary-style photography is the way to go!

How to Bring Personality Into a City Wedding

Here’s the thing about city weddings: they can be very intimidating at first. There’s so much happening, and it’s easy to get caught up in schedules and traffic and all the little details. But when you focus on what you want out of the day instead of what everyone else expects? That’s where the magic happens!

Cheyenne and Christian’s wedding was full of personality. The checkered dance floor. The flash mob. The mix of modern design and classic details. The getting-ready moments. Every choice they made felt intentional but never forced, and so unique to them!

If you’re planning your own Downtown LA wedding, here’s how to make it feel like you:

  1. Add something unexpected. Surprise your guests with a band, an outfit change, a little something that gets people talking, or if you wanna be epic like Cheyenne and Christian, do a flash mob!
Turn your space into an experience. Add cozy lounge corners, cute cocktails, or a photo moment that fits your vibe!

  2. Don’t stress the timeline. Some of my favorite photos from this day happened between things like the quiet moments before the flash mob, the deep breaths right before walking down the aisle, etc.

  3. Chase that five-minute golden hour. The LA light hits different when it bounces between buildings, so if you can sneak away for a few portraits before the party kicks back in, you will thank yourself later! Plus, it’s good to take 5 minutes throughout your day to just soak it in for a second. This is a great time to do that!

City weddings don’t have to feel structured either; they can be fun, loud, romantic, emotional, and everything in between. The best LA wedding locations are the ones that give you the space to be yourselves, whether that’s in a ballroom, a rooftop, or a hidden garden in the middle of downtown!
