How to Plan Your Laguna Beach Engagement Session at Fisherman’s Cove and Other Gorgeous Locations
Laguna Beach engagement sessions. Just saying those words gets me so excited! Seriously, if you're planning to get engaged and have a beachy, romantic vibe in mind, Laguna Beach is the place to be. It’s got it all, stunning coastline views, picturesque sunsets, and of course, those iconic sandy beaches. But before you go running down to Fisherman’s Cove (more on that in a sec), let’s talk about how to plan your Laguna Beach engagement session and make it you.
I recently had the chance to shoot Kendall and Austin’s engagement session at one of Laguna Beach's most charming spots, Fisherman’s Cove Beach. It was such a dream! The couple was looking for a location with a combination of intimacy and beauty, and oh boy, Fisherman’s Cove delivered that and more. I’m talking about a beautiful overlook above the beach, providing all the privacy, with an easy walk down to the sand for those sweet, romantic moments by the water. But let’s dive into the specifics and tips that you need to make your Laguna Beach engagement session a total success!
Tips to Plan Your Laguna Beach Engagement Session
Tip 1: Get a Permit for Your Laguna Beach Engagement Session
Okay, before we even talk about the pictures, let’s talk logistics. Laguna Beach is known for being super strict when it comes to permits for photo sessions, and it’s crucial that you have the right one in hand. If you're planning to have a session on any public beach or area within Laguna Beach (especially the more popular spots like Fisherman’s Cove), you’ll need to get a permit from the city.
I know, I know—it might sound like a pain, but trust me, it’s worth it to avoid getting kicked off the beach mid-session! The city is pretty serious about this, and the last thing you want is to be asked to leave during your engagement photos. Luckily, it’s pretty simple to apply for a permit. Just be sure to do it ahead of time, so you can focus on the fun stuff (like your outfits and all those cute moments)! You can find out how to apply here!
Tip 2: Expect Some Crowds—Unless You’re an Early Bird!
Let’s face it, Laguna Beach is gorgeous, which means it attracts a crowd. The beaches are a popular spot for tourists, locals, and people who just want to catch some sun. If you’re planning to take your engagement photos in a more popular area like Fisherman’s Cove Beach, be prepared for some curious onlookers. Unless you’re starting your session super early in the morning (I’m talking sunrise vibes), there’s a good chance you’ll have some people walking by or lounging nearby.
Now, I know that sounds like it might ruin your vibe, but don’t worry! I’ve got you covered. I’ll know how to work around it and still get those gorgeous, intimate shots. Plus, a little crowd actually adds to the energy and makes for some funny behind-the-scenes moments.
Tip 3: Check the Tide Charts!
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from shooting tons of Laguna Beach engagement sessions, it’s that the tides can totally make or break your photos. Some of the best spots, like Fisherman’s Cove and Diver’s Cove, are amazing but can totally be impacted by high tide. When the tide’s high, the sand practically disappears, and you end up with no room to play or have fun in the water. Talk about a buzzkill!
This is where my job comes in—I’ll always check the tide charts before the shoot and make sure we’re shooting at the best time when the tide is low. I’ll also be ready to move locations if needed, so you don’t have to worry about anything other than having an amazing time in front of the camera.
Fisherman’s Cove Beach: A Laguna Beach Engagement Dream!
Let’s talk specifics about Fisherman’s Cove Beach, where I shot Kendall and Austin’s engagement session. If you’re looking for something that feels a bit more private, this is the place for you! Fisherman’s Cove is a hidden gem, below the cliffs of Laguna Beach. There’s a lovely overlook that gives you a perfect view of the beach without having to deal with tons of foot traffic. This makes it one of the best Laguna Beach engagement session locations if you’re looking for that intimate vibe but don’t want to give up the beautiful coastal views.
What I really love about Fisherman’s Cove is the balance it strikes between seclusion and accessibility. The view from the top is absolutely stunning, and when you head down to the sand, you get some of the best of both worlds—privacy and the classic beachy feel. Kendall and Austin were the perfect couple to capture here, and we got to take full advantage of all the best that this spot has to offer.
And of course, we made sure to take full advantage of the golden hour. As the sun set, the warm, soft light made their photos look like they were straight out of a romantic movie.
Quick Tips about Fisherman's Cove
How to Get There: Fisherman’s Cove is tucked between the cliffs in Laguna Beach, so access is a little hidden. It’s located near the Laguna Beach High School area, right next to the main beach.
Parking: Parking can be tricky—there’s a small lot nearby, but be prepared for street parking as well. I always suggest arriving early to snag a good spot!
Perfect Timing: Aim for golden hour! The light here is just perfect during the evening, and you'll get that dreamy, soft light.
Tide Awareness: High tide can quickly eat up all the sand. Check tide schedules to ensure we have enough space for some fun photos on the beach.
Privacy Vibes: The overlook near Fisherman’s Cove gives a beautiful, private area with a view before heading down to the beach. Perfect for intimate moments!
